Transitional Year Admissions and Application Process

Transitional Year Admissions

All applications for the Transitional year residency are submitted and received through the Electronic Residency Application Service ERAS.

Piedmont Athens Regional Graduate Medical Education Transitional Year accepts highly qualified residents for its training programs.

Applicants should possess the following qualities to be able to perform the essential functions of the specialty and meet the standards of the curriculum:

  • Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Emotional stability and maturity
  • Empathy for others
  • Physical and mental stamina
  • Sound judgment

Successful candidates exhibit strong qualifications for the specialty they wish to pursue.

General Admissions Requirements

An applicant must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible to an appointment to an ACGME-accredited program:

  1. Graduate from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical education (LCME); or
  2. Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
  3. Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
    1. Holds a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or
    2. Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction on his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or
    3. Has graduated from a medical school outside the United States and has completed a Fifth Pathway** program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Successful candidates must fulfill all applicable Georgia licensure eligibility requirements prior to starting the program.

A pre-admission health review and current immunization record are required prior to starting.

Prospective residents must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.


Applicants who are offered interviews will be contacted by email to schedule an interview date. Interviews will be held at Piedmont Athens Regional, and interview day agendas will be provided to selected applicants prior to arrival.
